International Women’s Day occurs annually on March 8; however, it is a day to be acknowledged every day. International Women’s Day has been celebrated for over a century, with the first women’s day taking place in 1911. This day is to celebrate social, economic, cultural and political achievements among all women, encouraging unity, celebration, reflection, advocacy and action, globally. This year’s theme is “I am Generation Equality: Realizing Women’s Rights.” For many years there has been a push and a progressive road map to shine a light on women’s rights and equality, this year’s theme supports the work that has been done in the past 25 years.
The Generation Equality campaign aims to bring people together, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, race, country and religion, to stand in solidarity supporting gender equality globally. Generation Equality was first formed through the Beijing Platform for Action, which has been the most visionary agenda for female empowerment and equality. Established in 1995, 189 governments implemented this platform that committed themselves to take strategic action regarding 12 areas of significant concern, poverty, education, health, violence, armed conflict, economy, power, institutional mechanisms, human rights, media, environment and the girl child. This platform allowed women on a global scale to stand together and shed light on unjust and unfair women’s rights.
In the past 25 years, since the Beijing Platform for Action, there has been some progress; however, it is a slow process. According to the UN, not a single country can claim to have achieved complete equality across all areas of concern. Women need to come together to advocate for equality because, as a collective, women can achieve more.
According to the International Women’s Day campaign, there are six areas to highlight for this year’s day:
These categories are fundamental as they empower women to step outside of the normal boundaries. Black Gold would like to applaud and celebrate all the exceptional women who work in our office.
On March 8, 2020, wear purple, acknowledge achievements and celebrate one another in support of International Women’s Day.
